The Volunteer Auxiliary of Northeast Methodist Hospital awarded $15,000 in scholarships to area students pursuing careers in health care. The 15 winning students each received a $1,000 scholarship to help them cover the costs of college. A reception was held in their honor and each student received a certificate of achievement.

From Roosevelt High School, recipients included Sherina Eddington, Quiana Wright, Destiny Byrd, Diamond Walker and Cheyenne Brazier. Denise Schaefer of Marion High School, Valerie Trevino of Karen Wagner High School, and Valerie Pecina of Madison High School received scholarships.

College recipients included Isaac Camacho of Hardin Simmons University, Maricela Andrade and Amy Gaylord of The University of Incarnate Word, Shannon Devaney of Texas Tech University, Erma-Kate Espinosa of St. Phillips College, Rebecca McCutcheon of San Antonio College and Catherine Lohmeyer of Texas Lutheran University.

Scholarships were awarded to students based on scholastic performance, extracurricular involvement and financial need. The auxiliary raises money from profits received through the hospital gift shop, bake sales, and book and jewelry sales.
