Monday, November 20, 2006 THE OLDEST EMPLOYEE AT METHODIST HOSPITAL TO CELEBRATE HER 90TH BIRTHDAY ON NOVEMBER 22 WITH SPECIAL PARTY At almost 90 years old, Mel Fleming is the oldest employee at Methodist Hospital. In recognition of this milestone and her service to the hospital, employees will celebrate with a party for her in the admitting department where she works at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22. Fleming is known for her get-up-and-go approach to life. An employee for 21 years, she is never late for work nor does she forget her ID badge. In the admitting department, she helps patients into wheelchairs and stretchers and escorts them to their rooms. One day a week, she discharges patients—sending them home with a hug. “My age is a plus with patients,” said Fleming. “I can relate to them as their mother or grandmother.” Fleming has been active all her life. She began dancing at age 4, was on the swim team at UT Austin, climbed Mount Fuji twice and has floated down the Nile River. “Based on what has been given to me and what has happened to me, I have won the lottery of life,” said Fleming. Please let us know if you are interested in covering the party. After the party, Fleming also will be available for photos or footage as she interacts with patients doing her job. All media must be escorted. If the lot in front of Methodist Hospital at 7700 Floyd Curl Drive is full, parking is available in Parking Garage #1, accessible on Louis Pasteur. |
